Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.) What is Nutrition Coaching? Nutrition coaching is a process designed to improve your overall health and wellness through the guidance of a Registered Dietitian. The Registered Dietitian guides you in ways to improve your diet and nutrition habits to better your overall health. Nutrition coaching is ideal for people who want to make and maintain dietary changes. It is important to note that all Nutritional Coaching offered at Science Fitness is provided by a Registered Dietitian NOT a Nutritionist. Registered Dietitian's are required to meet strict educational and professional prerequisites provided by the American Dietetic Association (ADA). Nutritionists are not regulated, thus anyone can claim to be a Nutritionist. Registered Dietitian vs. Nutritionist: What is the difference? Keeping in line with our mission to provide only the best services to our clientele, we only allow Registered Dietitian's to provide nutritional coaching services at Science Fitness. With a quick certification on-line or no certification at all, anyone can claim to be a "Nutritionist". A Registered Dietitian is an expert in food and nutrition. They give dietary advice, help promote healthy eating habits, develop specific diets for people, and participate in nutrition research. They are regulated by the American Dietetic Association (ADA). They must meet strict educational and professional prerequisites and pass a national exam before they are registered dietitians. Registered Dietitians do not "sell" anything - they educate. They have no specific diet company’s plan to push, since the plan is built around you, the client, not vice versa. Our Dietitian's Nutritional Coaching relies on regular grocery store (not diet company) food, and lifestyle changes. Another plus--RDs have a 4-year degree and go through a mandatory internship. Dietitians also must pass a registration exam and pursue continuing education requirements of the ADA. They are truly nutrition professionals and have much more nutrition training than your typical MD. They are considered health care professionals. What are the educational and professional requirements for a Registered Dietitian?
Why do I need a Dietitian? Just as a personal trainer helps you understand what types of exercise your body needs for results, a Nutrition and Wellness Coach can help you gain an understanding of your own nutritional needs. What will happen at my first and follow-up appointments? You will need to complete a Nutritional Health History Questionnaire and a 3-day food log before meeting with the Dietitian for your first appointment. At your first appointment the Dietitian will assess what nutritional advice you require, review your specific nutritional and lifestyle challenges, discuss any personal nutritional concerns you may have and provide you with a detailed personalized plan to follow. Follow-up appointments are necessary to assess your progress, discuss your challenges and new strategies and re-assess your goals. How many appointments do I need? It is ideal to initially consult with your Dietitian weekly to ensure that you are on the right track, then eventually you are encouraged to spread your appointments out monthly until your desired goal is achieved. After that, it is commonly advised to see your Dietitian three times a year after your goals have been achieved to ensure compliance just as you would go to your Doctor for a checkup. ![]() |
